Nature Vs. Nurture

After many wild days- the question has been on my mind if my sweet (extremely wild) child could have ADD. Sometimes when I speak to her, I swear it goes in one ear, and out the other. I was diagnosed with ADD as a kid and other than the fact that the Dr. had over medicated me- it was never a real issue. Yes- the Dr. over medicated me. I never talked (me? I know!) never wanted to go out of my way to play with kids- I felt like a loner (trust me, it was only temporary) Once we got the medication all figured out, it wasn't a real issue. In fact, I only remember taking it in Elementary school. I grew out of the lack of concentration, and did Herbal methods to help me focus. My question is this: Is the lack of attention span age appropriate, or is this an early sign of what is to come? I talked with a friend this morning and she was wondering the same thing about her kiddo. I mean- it goes back to the age old question, is it Nature, or Nurture. I ask myself this question all the time. I know people with kids who are exactly like their kids when it comes to personality, expressions, moods, etc. So if it is nurture- what does my child say about me?

maybe give it a minute, let her be in school for a while and see if her teachers say anything. three year olds have attention spans like goldfish.

Its totally normal, at least for over here. Since Ethan left at 7am Ryan has had 3 timeouts, and its 8:54. All for not listening, with warnings before the actual time out. Ryan's preschool teacher told me they switch activities every 10-15 min, sometimes earlier because that is all this age can handle. Like Liz said, i'm very curious to see how Ryan will do at school. He has just been him and i for so long...we both need a break and he needs rules/instruction from someone else.

School will tell all-I had kids who needed meds and the parents wouldn't agree to it and kids who were perfectly fine in class and the parents demanded drugs from the dr's. If you are on top of things and keep an eye on it (which you already are-yeah for you-you are such a good mama!!!!) she will be fine too!
On a side note-we have gone through lots of nutrition things with Nathan over the past 3 years and I have learned some things along the way. Food sensitivities, not allergies-can show up as signs of ADD or even cause ADD. I had Nathan tested for gluten and in the meantime, it turns out he is sensitive to vanilla-if the kid has any vanilla his behavior is horrible and I notice it now that I know. I have resources and websites if you ever get to the point and want or need them-let me know. I went through a Natural Clinical Nutritionist-insurance doesn't cover him or the tests but it was worth knowing! There was even a testimonial for one of the tests that says the child's ADD was cured when they realized she was sensitive to grapes of all things! Long winded....sorry.....I have lots of experience from my teaching days and lots of nutrition experience from my issues with Nathan!Oh and yes attention spans are super short for this age too!
